Bald-Faced Hornets Nest

Catch of the Week: Bald-Faced Hornets Nest

September 16, 2016

Bald-faced hornets are pesky critters that can wreak quite a bit of havoc if you do not take care of them quickly. This past week our technicians were called to a Des Moines home with a serious bald-faced hornets nest. As you can see in the photo, the hornets began to build their nest on the side of a planter. This is a great example of how these pests are able to start a nest pretty much anywhere.

Behavior and Diet of Bald-Faced Hornets

Most homeowners will notice bald-faced hornets throughout the day rather than in the evening. These pests tend to build their nests around buildings, bushes, or on trees. Therefore, it is important for homeowners to continuously check around the property before performing any yard work. Adult bald-faced hornets tend to consume sugary liquids, such as juices and nectar.

Tips to Keep Bald-Faced Hornets at Bay

As a homeowner, there are various proactive tactics that can help keep bald-faced hornets off of your property. To start, begin by removing any bird feeders. Bird feeders provide the bald-faced hornets food value. Next, check the exterior of your home for any broken siding or cracks that could provide the wasps shelter for a nest. And lastly, close off any trash bins or additional food sources, such as compost piles.
