Catch of the Week: Fruit Flies

This past week, our technicians were called to a West Des Moines home with a serious fruit fly infestation. Upon further investigation, we detected the culprit - rotten potatoes in the homeowner's pantry. In this particular situation, the solution was a quick and easy fix - simply throw out the container and the potatoes within it. By doing so, the fruit flies' food source was gone, and they would be soon, as well.

Fruit Fly Appearance

Adult fruit flies tend to grow to about 4 mm long; they have red eyes and a tan thorax. Fruit flies may appear to be brown or tan in color at first glance.

Fruit Fly Behavior and Diet

Fruit flies are most popular throughout the warmer months and become prevalent throughout harvest season. Though they are most common throughout summer, they are common inside throughout the entire year. The fruit fly is attracted to fruits, vegetables and any fermenting foods.

How to Detect a Fruit Fly Infestation

The easiest way to detect a fruit fly infestation is when you see an abundance of these pests swarming your trash or anywhere in your kitchen. They are most attracted to decaying fruit or vegetables. However, they are also known to be interested in liquor and beer bottles.
