Opossum Appearance

The opossum (also called possum) is the only marsupial (female with a pouch) in North America. They are about the size of a cat, have black to gray fur, and long, pointed noses (pink in color).

Opossum Behavior and Diet

Opossums are most active at night. They are non-aggressive animals (although they may hiss or growl when frightened) that prefer to avoid confrontations and be left alone. When threatened by a human or animal that it is unable to frighten or run away from, the opossum will "play dead." This response is involuntary. They become comatose, foam from the mouth, and secrete a foul smell from their anal glands. They will not move even if they are prodded at or carried away.

Their dens can be found in a variety of areas, including hollow trees, stumps, rock piles, abandoned burrows, cold air return ducts and attics. Opossums will create their nest close to food sources. Due to being an omnivore, opossum's meals typically consist of insects, fruit, grass, birds, mammals and fish.

Opossum Reproduction

Typically, opossums reproduce only once a year. They could have up to two litters that may result in about seven offspring. However, there could be as many as 13 within the litter.

Signs of an Opossum Infestation

For many homeowners, the most common way to detect an opossum infestation is by actually running into them. If you begin to spot them consistently around your garbage bins or openings of your home, you very well could have an opossum infestation on your hands.

Preferred Pest Opossum Removal

The only way to catch an opossum is to trap them. A cage-type trap is baited with specially formulated food and scents to attract opossums. Once trapped, our licensed wildlife technician will safely and humanely relocate the opossum. After the opossums are removed, all entry holes will be sealed with heavy duty materials to make sure they don't return again.
