Centipede Appearance 

Centipedes are known for their abundance of legs which can range anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs. Their bodies' are flat and contain one pair of legs per segment. As for color, centipedes are typically brown or reddish orange in color, though they have been known to occur in other colors and patterns, as well. The House Centipede can grow to a length of 1 ½ inches.

Centipede Behavior and Diet 

Adult centipedes are fond of hiding in dark, moist spaces, typically throughout the winter months. The majority of centipedes live no longer than a year. However, some species can live up to six years. Centipedes can make their way into homes or buildings, though they do not come out and roam during the day. Homeowners typically find them in dark, damp areas such as bathrooms, basements, closets, etc. The majority of centipedes are carnivores and prey on spiders, worms and other soft-bodied insects.

Centipede Reproduction 

Centipedes mate throughout the warmer months and remain dormant in the winter. These pests lay their eggs within rotting logs or soil. Female centipedes will tend to their hatchlings and eggs by curling their bodies around them. However, some species are recognized for eating or abandoning their eggs. After hatching, the young centipedes go through a series of molts and shed their exteriors before achieving adulthood.

Signs of a Centipede Infestation

Centipedes leave no significant signs that they have infested a home. The main sign that showcases you may have a centipede infestation on your hands is actually seeing the pests.
